The ever-increasing global demand for genetic analyses that support clinical diagnosis and prevention has increased the requirements in genetic testing methods, which remain time-consuming and require multiple items of expensive equipment and specialised staff and, thus, have a particularly high cost.

The developmental goal of Micro²Gen through the programme titled 'Development and support of new highly knowledge intensive innovative enterprises (Spin-off and Spin-out)' is to design, manufacture, conduct quality controls and market a single-use Lab-On-a-Chip for genetic analyses exclusively in Greece. To date, various processes with micro-systems and instruments designed and manufactured in whole by the company and associates in Greece have been completed successfully.

The Micro2Gen product will address all the disadvantages of existing methods and will allow for a broader and more economical use of genetic tests, even in small microbiology laboratories and clinics.

The end product will be an integrated Pro-All-in-One biochip™, where a single chip will perform three different processes that, to date, were performed at three different work stations in genetic testing laboratories:

• isolating and cleaning the DNA from the sample,
• enhancing the DNA so that it can be measured,
• detecting hybridisation, a procedure that leads to the identification of specific DNA mutations.

To date, various processes with micro-systems and instruments designed and manufactured in their entirety by the company and associates in Greece have been completed successfully.
